Hermias:
The Philosopher King
Although Hermias was considered a slave
of Eubulus, a banker from Bithynia, he was
extremely valued, respected, and privileged.
During his early life, he was sent to Athens
in order to to study under Plato. During
these years, he became great friends with
Aristotle, who also was a student of Plato.
This period in history was an important
one for the Ancient Greeks. Most city-states
faced serious internal fight and disorder.
This power vacuum created the perfect
environment for a commanding figure to
take authority in the form of the Macedonian
Empire, led by Philip II of Macedon and
Alexander the Great.
After the end of his education in Athens,
Hermias returned to Atarneus (around
Dikili). Eubulus died not long after leaving
Hermias as the absolute leader of the realm.
With educated policies, Hermias grew his
