polysaccharide-chitosan

hydrogel and encapsulation

of carnitine

In our project we wanted to obtain a hydrogel
prepared with chia seed polysaccharides
crosslinked with chitosan. Hydrogels are
compounds which are able to hold high amount
of water and encapsulate substances. We use
bio-materials to encapsulate carnitine in chia-
chitosan beads. The use of the bio-materials

minimizes the side effects so bio-compatible
structure will be obtained.

After the bead is taken to the body it will stay
in steady-state until it reaches intestine. Later in
intestine it will lose stability and the controlled
release of the content will occur over determined
time.

Carnitine contained by our beads contributes
to the transportation of long chain fatty acids
to the mitochondrial matrix and accelerates
as an important metabolite in terms of the fat
metabolism. Therefore, by augmenting the
fat burning it immensely helps to prevent the
obesity (also it helps with diseases like diabetes,

cardiovascular diseases, hypercholesterolemia)
Obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat
accumulation that presents a risk to health and
causes ancillary complications.
